If you open a specific folder in Bridge (as opposed to browsing your entire hard drive) you’ll notice the panel at the bottom is now highlighted with a bold rectangle outline and an icon indicating there are 100 images in this folder. One of the most useful features of Bridge is the ability to have two collections of files open at the same time. A simple example is we have a computer that’s constantly running a program called PowerPoint. PowerPoint uses a number of files to create slides for the presentation. You may want to create a small folder with all of the slides for a particular presentation. You can keep the slides organized within the folder by using subfolders. As you create more and more slides for a particular presentation, you may want to create a second folder with a date stamp that indicates the year you created that particular set of slides.

But what we can do with Bridge’s copy command is even better than our regular file browser can do. Bridge lets us copy images from one folder to another or from one file to another. Sometimes, it’s the easiest way to move images from one place to another. For example, we can use Bridge to move an image file from one folder to another folder on our computer. Other times, we’ll want to copy an image file into another file. Also, we’ll copy everything from one folder into another folder or into another file. Bridge makes it simple.

Bridge can do all this, but there’s more. We’ll take a closer look at temporary folders later in this series. For now, we’ll just focus on moving images from one place to another. Bridge automatically creates a temporary folder for every image we copy or move. We can use these temporary folders to place our images. They’re disposable, meaning they disappear as soon as we’re finished with them. We also rename or delete these temporary folders. This makes it easy to organize our images.

We can open images with Bridge. We can move images. We can copy images. And we can delete images. We can do all of these things not only on our photos and folders but also on anything that we want to copy, move, delete or rename with the copy command. A really useful feature of Bridge is that it keeps track of image and folder renames in a database. We’ll get back to database later in this series. For now, let’s get started with the most important part of using Bridge: opening and renaming images.

That’s our quick tour of the Bridge interface. You’ll notice that you don’t see many window controls. That’s because in Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom we just click and drag to reposition the panels and move around the interface to see what we need to see. When we need to make changes, we do that with the content adjustment tools like a layer adjustment or levels adjustment. I’ll show you how to do that in another post. For now let’s just say that we don’t use the window controls in Photoshop or Lightroom. So why do we need them in Bridge? Well, as you’ll see next time, we do.
