The new randomisation features in Live allow for random changes to in-progress recordings. For example, a mobile piece of music might be recorded all in one take, but a hotshot improvisation with extra effects recorded on top might be then randomly wiped out: This will leave your original, edited version as a perfect recording, and an extra version (assuming the randomisation feature isn’t disabled) which will have all the extra effects in an edited, randomised manner. This is excellent for adding a touch of unpredictability to a piece: it can be a technique to complement the original or for creating “out-of-time” material. Randomisation is a feature for Live that has proved a bit of a challenge. Even when strolling along in the Arrange view, clicking somewhere in an audio clip’s segment and then hitting randomize was enough to mess it up. But the Arp page had always been there for this, and you can do it by selecting Arp, randomly rewinding in that Arp and then choosing Release Mode. However, this feature is only available when you choose to randomise an arpeggiator. But doing so only randomises the segments of the arpeggiator. To randomly sweep the arpeggiator’s time window, you’ll have to drill down into the arp page and choose Randomise next to the Arpeggiator Arp Track (not just the Arp page itself). It’s a slightly laborious process and unless you also want to randomise the entire Arp page, it doesn’t seem entirely worth it – even though the new randomisation feature in Live’s main window is not only available on the Arp page, but also when editing the arpeggiator parameters.
